UKGC vs MGA vs Curaçao — three regulators, three kinds of Tuesday
Updated 29 August 2026
Regulators are not flavours of the same product. They are different buildings with different phones. If you only remember the crest colour, you will pick the wrong building when you need it.
The UK Gambling Commission is point-of-consumption regulation for Great Britain. The operator needs a remote licence to take a British player. Advertising is restricted, credit cards are out, GamStop is mandatory, and a licensed ADR sits behind the complaints process. That is why every UK brand in this catalogue can sit in strong or solid and none of them sit in avoid. It is also why a British player on an MGA or Curaçao .com is not ‘being European’. They are being unlicensed for that market.
The MGA is a serious EU-facing authority with a public register and a player-support function. It is slower and less paternal than the Commission. It does not replace GamStop. It does not make a Canadian deposit safer. It is a good sign when the number is real and the player was meant to be on that licence. It is a bad sign when a UK site flashes a Maltese PDF.
Curaçao is the default thin wrapper for offshore brands, including most of the Canada directory here. The sublicence model has been rewritten; many footers have not. Recourse is closer to ‘email and hope’ plus your payment provider. We score those files mixed or weak unless something else in ownership or transparency is unusually clean. A long-running brand name (888, Jackpot City as a name) can lift a file inside mixed. It cannot turn Curaçao into the UKGC.
Kahnawake and Anjouan sit between ‘a building exists’ and ‘a seal exists’. We explain them on the licences page. We still do not invent their numbers on Canadian dossiers.
Practical test: can you find the licensee in an official search in two minutes, and does that licensee match the T&Cs? If yes and the market matches you, you have a regulator. If no, you have a graphic. SecScore’s 25% licence weight is this test, written as a number.
Do not collect licences. One correct licence in your market beats three seals from markets you are not in. A Canadian player does not get British ADR by visiting the UK Jackpot City review and then clicking the Canadian dest. The /go/ slugs are different for a reason.
